Write a Blog or Op-Ed

The Historians on Housewives seeking authors for blog pieces (1500 words or shorter) or longer Op-eds  (1500-3000 words) that merge Bravo’s reality television programming with current affairs and/or historical phenomena.  Historians on Housewives is headquartered  in Orange County, California where Bravo launched the Housewife franchise with The Real Housewives of Orange County. Our project brings together scholars from all ranks and disciplinary backgrounds to explore historical questions arising from the themes, events, episodes, and story arcs shaping Bravo Network’s, Housewives franchises (and other Bravo-related reality television shows).

Possible themes include but are not limited to the following:

  • Feminism (feminist thought, concepts, and histories)

  • Motherhood (IVF/older mothers, childbirth, performance of motherhood, race/class/gendering motherhood)

  • Masculinity/men (portrayal of husbands, sons, boyfriends, and male friends on the show, race/class/gendered differences in masculinity)

  • Parties and event planning (public displays of violence, alcohol and food, kinship formations, the role of charities)

  • Politics (Real Housewives and their connections to Trump (or former presidents), social movements, feminism and antifeminism)

  • Legacy of slavery and Jim Crow (black face, cultural appropriation, exploitation of workers, racialized spaces)

  • Violence (verbal/emotional fights, domestic violence, divorce, drug and alcohol abuse, different responses to violence in the various franchises)

  • Religion (Christianity, Evangelicalism, Judaism, Islam, Wicca, Atheism, etc.)

  • Immigrant communities (portrayal of immigrants/non-American cultures)

  • Ageism/intergenerational conflicts (Botox/plastic surgery, internalized misogyny, mother-daughter conflicts)

  • Suburbanization (Portrayal of suburban space and suburban relationships to metropolitan centers)

  • Archives and Historical Methods (Testimonials as oral history, archives, public history tours, family stories)

Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis. We are interested in pieces that are timely and thoughtful.
